The B.C. government decided in September 2013 to remove the George Massey tunnel and replace it with a $3.5-billion toll bridge

METRO VANCOUVER -- Richmond politicians want to know how a tunnel under the Fraser River that was deemed “good for 50 years” is to be filled in and replaced with a 10-lane bridge.

Coun. Harold Steves said council has sent a letter to the provincial government seeking all documentation around its September 2013 decision to remove the George Massey tunnel and replace it with a $3.5-billion toll bridge.

The World Health Organisation has issued a stark new warning about deadly levels of pollution in many of the world’s biggest cities, claiming poor air quality is killing millions and threatening to overwhelm health services across the globe.

Before the release next month of figures that will show air pollution has worsened since 2014 in hundreds of already blighted urban areas, the WHO says there is now a global “public health emergency” that will have untold financial implications for governments.

This week the Provincial government and Metro Vancouver mayors said they’re out of ideas on how to expand the transit system. That’s a huge problem because the biggest thing that we can do locally to fight climate change is switch from private cars to public transit. The best way to bring about that shift is to put a transit pass in everyone’s hand, and make transit affordable.

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon? Rally in New Westminster opposes coal trains and expansion of coal exports - Port Metro Vancouver is moving forward with plans to expand coal exports at Neptune Terminals in North Vancouver and to approve a brand new coal port on the Fraser River at Surrey Docks. Already, the Neptune and Westshore (Roberts Bank) terminals make the port the biggest exporter of coal in North America. That coal produces more GHG pollution than all the tar sands oil proposed for the Northern Gateway pipeline.
